MORENO VALLEY -- Calif. Firefighters working to put down a blaze Monday in Moreno Valley were sidetracked by a woman going into labor, according to authorities.
Firefighters at 2:08 a.m. responded to a structure fire at 24715 Qualton Court where they were met with heavy smoke, said Capt. Lori Windsor of the Riverside County Fire Department.
"In the middle of the fire, she walked up to us and said she was having heavy cramping and thought she was going into labor," said Engineer David Morrison. "We had two paramedics look at her and against medical advice she decided to drive herself to the hospital."
Twenty-two firefighters with five engines were at the scene and had the fire contained within 30 minutes, Windsor said.
Investigators searched Monday for the fire's cause. No word on the fate of the pregnant woman.
