A canoe capsized twice on Lake Washington near Juanita Beach Park, and rescuers jumped into action to save a man who was struggling in the cold and choppy waters.
The victim's friend knocked on the doors of Kirkland's Forbes Creek fire station about 2:18 p.m. Wednesday to get help. The man told firefighters his boat capsized near Juanita Bay and he swam to shore to get help. He said his friend was still out in the lake and needed to be rescued.
The victim was in the water for more than 25 minutes when two firefighters jumped in the water to save him. Battalion Chief Mike Haschak and Jeff Endsley put a flotation tube around the man and pulled him and the canoe to the dock. They quickly wrapped the man in a blanket.
Both the victim and his friend suffered mild hypothermia. They were treated at the fire station and released.
