California Wildfire Scorches Canyon, Threatens Home

Oct. 13, 2005
Children playing with fire may have sparked the blaze.

A wildfire in an Alta Vista-area canyon briefly threatened a home while consuming several acres of grass, brush and bamboo, authorities reported.

The non-injury blaze began spreading about 2:30 p.m. off Cervantes Avenue, near Division Street, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Initial evidence suggested that children playing with fire may have sparked the blaze, according to local media.

It took about 45 personnel, including a crew aboard a water-dropping helicopter, roughly 15 minutes to extinguish the flames, which moved near a home but caused no structural damage, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.
