October 13, 2005 -- Thousands of firefighters lined the streets of the Upper West Side in the pouring rain yesterday to honor three of their brothers who died on "Black Sunday" and another who was killed in Iraq.
Lts. Curtis Meyran, 46, and John Bellew, 37, died Jan. 23 when they were forced to jump from a burning building in The Bronx because they didn't have safety ropes.
Chief of Department Peter Hayden brought firefighters to tears as he told those gathered at the ceremony that widow Eileen Bellew recently called him to say she felt her husband was being forgotten.
Hayden told her that Bellew would be honored at the Memorial Day ceremony and that a plaque would be dedicated in his name next year.
"I could sense that Eileen was crying," Hayden said. "I realized how empty that must have sounded.
