Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed into law Tuesday new regulations aimed at making firefighters safer.
The bill requires that the Buildings Department notify the FDNY if a building has been modified.
"This bill will ensure that the brave men and women of the fire department will be thoroughly armed with accurate building information, which will improve public safety throughout our city and certainly improve their safety," said Bloomberg.
The bill was written in response to the death of two New York City firefighters last August.
Howard Carpluk and Michael Reilly were killed fighting a store fire in the Bronx. Officials concluded that renovations to that building could have led to their deaths.
