Driver Rescues Pennsylvania Family From Burning Home

Nov. 22, 2005

A local family is safe thanks to a quick-thinking stranger.

A man in his car spotted a fire Tuesday morning in South Strabane Township.

Firefighters said the family living in the home along Zediker Station Road was asleep when a fire started on the front porch.

The flames quickly spread to the eaves and the second floor.

But thanks to a man driving by everyone made it out safely.

Scott Reese, of the South Strabane Fire Department, said, "A passer-by stopped and went and banged on the back door and told them their porch was on fire. They were unaware they were in bed and they got out safely with a dog."

The family did, however, lose five cats.

The home had smoke alarms but they were not installed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
