El Paso County Bans Aerial Fireworks

May 23, 2006
Officials say they are concerned about dry conditions in the region.

City firefighters convinced El Paso County to ban certain fireworks for this year's Fourth of July holiday.

Because of our region's continuing drought, county commissioners approved a ban on aerial fireworks Monday.

The ban includes all forms of sky-rockets with sticks and missiles with fins.

"The sheriff's deputies will be monitoring the fireworks stands out there and if they are caught selling these banned aerial fireworks, they will be confiscated, they will issue citations to the stand owners," said Lt. Mario Hernandez, with the El Paso Fire Department.

The city of El Paso bans all fireworks within city limits, but county leaders say state law prohibits them from banning all fireworks in the county.
