Smoke was seen for miles after a fire broke out in a junkyard on the city's northeast side Wednesday afternoon.
The fire was reported at the All-City Auto Recycling Yard on Joyce Avenue at about 3:30 p.m., NBC 4 's Duarte Geraldino reported.
When crews arrived, three or four cars were on fire, but the blaze quickly spread to about 10 cars, officials said.
The cars were so tightly packed in the junkyard, so fire crews had difficulty reaching the fire. Crews were forced to stretch about 500 feet of hose into the junkyard.
Some of the cars had gasoline inside, prompting a fear of explosion.
Officials said the owner's son was moving cars inside the lot, which prevented fire crews from accessing the cars. He told officials he was just trying to put out the fire in a better way, Geraldino reported.
Investigators are still examining the cause of the fire, but said arson is not suspected at this time.
The owner's son was arrested for interfering with fire crews as they attempted to get inside the junkyard, Geraldino reported.
Authorities said there may have been several code violations that contributed to the growing fire.
No injuries were reported.
