A construction worker died Thursday morning when a concrete slab fell on top of him while he was working on a patio.
The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. at a house along Bellann Road, south of Hayden Run Road, on the city's northwest side, NBC 4 's Barbra Flannigan reported.
The man, who was not identified, was with another worker at the time of the incident.
Authorities said the dirt beneath the patio had been undercut several days ago. When a worker with Gomez Painting and Drywall went under the concrete block, it collapsed, trapping him.
Norwich Township firefighters said that when they arrived at the home, the man was removed from the concrete.
"Apparently they stuck something underneath the slab of concrete and lifted it up enough to slide him out from underneath," said Norwich Township Fire Capt. John King.
Fellow workers were able to rescue him, but he suffered injuries to his head, chest and leg.
The man was Hispanic and new to the country, Flannigan reported. No one knew his name at the scene.
"At this point, we're not sure who he is. He is a Latino male in his 20s to 30s. We have a name, but we can't verify who he is at this point," said Hilliard police Detective Sgt. Mike Redmond.
He was transported to The Ohio State University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Hilliard police said they will not file criminal charges in the case.
