The man was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in unknown condition.

Arson investigators ruled Tuesday that a house fire on the city's South Side was deliberately set by a man firefighters rescued from the burning home.

The fire late Monday night occurred at the home of Adrien Ramirez's girlfriend in the 800 block of Theo.

Lucy Narro, who just purchased the home a few hours before the fire, told police she refused to open her door when Ramirez came home after a night of drinking.

Narro said a short time later she heard windows breaking and smelled smoke.

Narro escaped the flames, but Ramirez did not.

"He stayed inside the house," said Narro. "I heard him yelling for help but I couldn't."

Ramirez was transported to the intensive care unit at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Damage to the house was estimated at about $35,000.
