The woman was hospitalized in critical condition.

Pittsburgh firefighters pulled a grandmother out of a burning home in the citys West End Monday night.

Dorothy Feaster was taken to Mercy Hospital in critical condition.

An off-duty paramedic spotted the smoke and tried to get inside the house in the 1000 block of Steuben Street, but was pushed back by the heavy smoke and flames. He then called for help.

Neighbors say Feaster was unable to get out because both of her legs have been amputated.

"She was yelling from the top of the steps because the second time we went in, you could hear her yelling. And then she quit," said neighbor Bob Reinhart. "It was pretty intense. It's like a helpless feeling. You try and help somebody like that and there's nothing you can do."

The cause of the fire is believed to be home improvement work happening in the basement.
