Two Albuquerque Homes Firebombed

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office and the Bernalillo County Fire Department are investigating attacks on two Albuquerque homes that happened within minutes of each other on Friday, Action 7 News reported.

One incident happened at a home near Nashville Avenue and Isleta Boulevard, and another occurred at San Saulo Road and Atrisco Drive.

Investigators believe someone, or possibly a group, threw homemade firebombs at the two area homes.

"You're endangering a lot of other families and kids' lives for foolish jokes that are unnecessary," said Deputy Chief Roger Tannen, with the Bernalillo County Fire Department.

The homeowner whose home was attacked on San Saulo Road was lucky because the bomb never fully ignited. However, the Nashville Avenue device was much more devastating.

"It's a horrible situation to go through," said Carlos Chavez, who lives in the area with his children. "It's scary. It makes you think about the safety of your own family."

The fire department said arson, specifically the use of a Molotov cocktail, is rare in the area.

Tannen said the bombs are even more dangerous this time of year because the terrain is so dry.

"The fire can spread from one building to another very quickly," Tannen said.

The fire department has advised residents to keep a watchful eye, but with no one in custody, many people in the South Valley have feared that their homes could become easy targets.
