BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Three people died in a fire Monday that collapsed part of the home and burst a natural gas line, officials said.
About 50 children and employees at a neighboring daycare center were evacuated as firefighters battled the blaze for two hours, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. C.W. Mardis.
Witnesses reported hearing an explosion as the fire erupted around 10:30 a.m. Firefighters also discovered downed power lines around the two-story, wood-frame house, which hindered efforts to extinguish the blaze, Mardis said.
Fire investigators were trying to determine what caused the blaze.
The names of the victims were not released.
