A 4-alarm fire that broke out at a New Jersey warehouse Thursday evening was brought under control Friday morning.
Officials are beginning an investigation into the causes of the fire.
Smoke from the fire could be seen across the Hudson in New York City. The flames threatened at least seven homes.
"We were just scared to death that we were going to lose the house," Steve Miller said. "The flames were just feet from the back window."
Firefighters were forced to run their hoses through the threatened houses in order to battle the flames.
"I just grabbed shorts, teeshirts, some sandals, grabbed the newborn baby, we got 5 people in our house. We just ran out," Miller said.
Rescuers moved everyone affected to safety, including a pair of puppies and two birds.
Homeowner Lilly Maldonado said, "They broke the door down to get the dogs out. We weren't here. They didn't have another choice but to break the door."
