Firefighters rescued a man who was trapped inside his burning apartment in Davie on Friday night.

The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment along Southwest 34th Court.

The flames and thick smoke blocked the man from getting out the front door.

He then used a lamp to break a window in the back of the apartment and was leaning out the window when fire crews arrived.

Meanwhile, a quick thinking neighbor was able to put out the flames.

"Initially, one of the neighbors saw that there was a fire. He grabbed one of the fire extinguishers, broke the window and actually extinguished the fire from the window partially with the fire extinguisher," said Battalion Chief Jorge Gonzalez.

Fire crews were able to get the man out of the apartment through the front door.

He was taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
