Arson was suspected in a Country Club Hills fire that injured a woman and a firefighter.
The fire happened in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Tierra Grande Condominiums in the 4100 block of 192nd Place, NBC5's Sharon Wright reported.
The fire began in resident Michelle Shirley's condominium, Wright reported. The fire then spread through Shirley's condominium and above.
"It appears to have started along the wall area in the center of the property," said Country Club Hills Deputy Fire Chief Joe Ellington.
"It was a lot of smoke, that's what I could see," said one resident.
James Henning woke up his fiancée and other residents at the condominiums.
"We're just grateful that we go out with our lives," said Michelle Hall, a resident. "It could have been far worse."
Residents said they were concerned, saying that it was the second time in recent weeks that there had been a fire in the very same unit.
"It was terrifying," Henning said. "The first time, there was a child involved."
Shirley was hospitalized in stable condition.
"We tried to get her out," Hall said. "She wouldn't come out."
"She came to the window, and went back and sat back down -- she was in that state of mind," Henning said. "She wasn't trying to leave."
