This is District Three-Fire Chief Glenn Coleman reporting on a landslide and building evacuation in Mount Airy. Fire units were dispatched at 6:11 p.m. to a report of a landslide into an apartment building with people unable to evacuate the structure.
Upon arriving, fire companies found a retaining wall had fell in due to heavy rain occurring over the last few days. The retaining wall took out two bridges that led to two apartment buildings located at 2980 and 2982 High Forest Avenue.
Approximately 30 people had to be rescued from the structures. The landslide did not reach the buildings; it stopped approximately four feet away from the structures. A decision was made to vacate both structures because more rain was forecasted for the evening.
The Cincinnati Building Department and the building owner's representatives responded to the scene. Also the American Red Cross responded and assisted approximately 18 people (5 families) who were displaced; the remaining residents are staying with family or friends.
There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. No loss was estimated on structural damages or on how long occupants may be displaced. Firefighters were on the scene about two hours.
