LORTON, Va. --
Fairfax County fire officials are trying to determine how a townhouse fire started in Lorton, Va., that killed one person and sent three people to the hospital.
Officials said the fire started about 1 a.m. on Cardinal Forest Lane.
When firefighters arrived, officials said, they found flames coming from the first floor of the home and heavy smoke coming from the second and third floors.
The fire quickly spread to two alarms and more than 60 firefighters responded to fight the blaze.
Fire Department spokesman Lt. Raul Castillo said firefighters did an initial search of the structure and then began an exterior attack.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the flames and then firefighters did a secondary search of the home and found 49-year-old Debra Elaine Chiles dead on the third floor of the home.
Two other people who were inside the home were injured, although their injuries are considered non-life-threatening, Castillo said.
One of the injured residents jumped from a third-floor window, officials said.
Castillo said one firefighter was also injured in the blaze.
Fire Department spokesman Dan Schmidt said the fire was accidental and started in a microwave oven in the kitchen.
There was some minor damage to a neighboring home, officials said.
Damage to the towhouse is estimated at $375,000, officials said.
