SAN DIEGO --

Fire officials are trying to determine if arson sparked a major fire that destroyed a condominium complex under construction in the Midway area.

The fire broke out in the 3500 block of Shoreline Bluff Lane near Kemper Street. No one was injured.

The fire spread through 12 units being built on the second floor, above a parking level.

San Diego firefighters arrived at the three-alarm fire just after midnight. Police began closing nearby roads.

Crews surrounded the blaze with four ladder trucks and began pouring water onto the flames from above. It took 75 firefighters, 12 fire engines and six trucks to contain the blaze about an hour later.

The complex, called At the Bay, takes up about one city block. Some units are already occupied.

At one point, the flames threatened other units and a medical building. Some units suffered minor exterior damage.

Damage is estimated at $1.5 million.

Arson investigators arrived at the scene shortly after 6 a.m. Fire officials said FBI investigators had also come to the fire, but they were not sure what role the FBI might play in the investigation.
