A family of nine is now homeless after the fire.

Firefighters from Frederick and Montgomery counties battled a two-alarm fire in Poolesville, Md., Monday morning.

Fire officials said the fire was reported about 4 a.m. in the 19500 block of Fisher Avenue.

A police officer on patrol saw a lot of smoke and went to investigate, authorities said. The officer discovered the roof of a town house ON fire. The officer then knocked on the door of the home, as well as residences on either side of the town house and alerted the residents to the blaze.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue services spokesman Pete Piringer said the residents were awake, but were unaware that their home was on fire. Everyone made it out of their homes safely, Piringer said.

Fire investigators believe the fire was associated with the chimney, Piringer said.

A family of nine, two adults and seven children, who live in the house will be displaced as a result of the, Piringer said. He also said fighting the fire has caused a lot of ice, which has made for unsafe conditions for firefighters.

Piringer said Fisher Avenue will be closed for a while, both because of emergency equipment and because of ice.
