A cigarette is being blamed for sparking a fire in a Sacramento apartment building Thursday.
The blaze happened Thursday afternoon at a complex on River Plaza Drive in the Natomas area.
Fire crews arrived to find flames coming from the from the balcony of a second-floor apartment. Firefighters had to break through the roof of the building to reach several hot spots.
Several people who saw the fire said they used garden hoses to try to control the flames until fire crews arrived.
"We had it minimized pretty much by the time they got here, but they definitely did what they had to do and finished it off," said Chase Bewley, who was among those who helped.
No injuries were reported.
