Firefighters, police and neighbors worked together to complete the rescue.

An east side Indianapolis man, two police officers and firefighters are all being lauded as heroes after helping a woman and her son escape a burning home Monday night.

The victims were listed in serious condition at Wishard Hospital Tuesday morning. Officials said the neighbor and officers worked to get inside the house in the 200 block of South Rural Street shortly after the fire began at about 8:30 p.m.

The officers and neighbor Marshall Jones fought heavy smoke to pull the woman out of the home, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

"It was kind of like a dream. I just reacted -- more or less fear, thinking about my neighbors," Jones said. "I care about them. I don't want anything to happen to them."

The woman's son was also in the home. Firefighters were able to get inside and pull him out alive.

The two Indianapolis police officers involved in the rescue were taken to Wishard Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fire remains under investigation. The identities of the officers and firefighters involved were not released.
