D.C. Fire Station Left Powerless

May 15, 2006
Personnel were called to the basement of their firehouse to check out smoke.

A power surge in the basement of Engine Company 31 knocked out power to the building Monday morning.

About 4:30 a.m., officials said a call went out for smoke in the basement of the firehouse located at 4930 Connecticut Avenue, N.W.

Firefighters quickly removed the smoke and when it was determined the problem was electrical in nature, the Potomac Electric Power Company was called.

In the meantime, fire officials said the firehouse is running off emergency power, which allows the firefighters to receive and respond to emergency calls.

Pepco crews are in the process of determining the cause of the power surge and restoring full power to the building.

So far it looks like nearby residences have not been affected, News4 reported.

Officials said the firehouse is also the temporary home of Engine Company 28 located on Wisconsin Avenue Northwest near Tenley Circle while their building is being rebuilt.
