Late Night Visit Saves Ohio Woman, Dog

The victim saw flames in her bedroom mirror, grabbed the dog, her keys and purse and fled.

Authorities said a visit from a daughter and grandson may have saved a womans life in Clark County.

Officials said the woman escaped her burning home with nothing but her purse and her dog.

The woman who lives in the home said she is normally in bed by 9:30 p.m. and up by 5:30 a.m. However, a visit from her family kept her up a bit later and allowed her to hear and then escape a small explosion and fire that roared through her bedroom and completely destroyed her house.

Bunny Rodgers said she saw a lot of smoke after hearing a loud pop in her bedroom. She said she got half way down the hallway and saw black billowing smoke coming at her.

Rodgers said she saw flames in the mirror of her dresser and grabbed her dog, key and purse and then got out.

Rodgers said she stood on the porch screaming for help because her phone would not work. Neighbors made sure Rodgers got her car and her dog pulled safely away from the flames.

Firefighters said the intense heat made them concentrate on keeping the flames from spreading. They said the home burned to the ground and now Rodgers is staying with family members.

She said that if her daughter and grandson had not been over working on the computer, she might not have heard the fire start.

The state fire marshals office will go to the scene on Thursday morning and look into what caused the small explosion and fire.
