An 8-month-old girl is listed in critical condition after she was found home alone during a house fire Thursday morning on the city's west side.
A neighbor called the fire department to a duplex in the 1300 block of Medford Avenue at about midnight. The neighbor was awakened when her smoke detector went off.
Two neighbors went to the home that had caught on fire and found the front door open, but the screen door closed. They heard a baby crying inside, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.
When firefighters arrived, Pvt. Kevin Gill went inside and found the baby in her crib.
"I have three daughters of my own and they're my world and it just makes me feel good that the baby still has a chance at life," Gill said. "I'm just hoping and praying for the best."
The baby was taken to Wishard Hospital. A neighbor told 6News that the baby's father showed up at the home about five minutes after the fire department left. There was no information about the location of the child's mother.
The fire department is investigating how the blaze began.
