September 6, 2005 -- The FDNY is pulling a page out of the Police Department's playbook to combat lagging response times.

Bravest bosses are using a computerized system to give themselves a firmer hand in analyzing performance and increasing accountability throughout the department, The Post has learned.

The computerized database breaks down the number of emergency calls, types of emergencies and response times by individual units.

The unveiling of the system, which one source likened to the NYPD's "CompStat for firefighters," comes as firefighters are facing unprecedented heat from above to reduce response times.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said the system is an asset because with knowledge, comes the power to do better.

"You manage what you measure," Scoppetta said. "It's going to be a permanent part of this department."

The system, called Management Indicator Reporting Systems, was quietly implemented about a year ago.

In recent months, the MIRS figures have become available to borough commanders, battalion chiefs and other supervising officials.

This method of keeping a watchful eye on firefighting data is similar to the NYPD's 11-year-old CompStat program, a mapping system that breaks down criminal patterns and activity, along with arrests, to gauge the effectiveness of individual commanders in the field.
