They were returning to the station when the single-vehicle crash occurred.

Six firefighters were injured on Friday when their fire truck struck a tree.

One of those firefighters was seriously injured, NBC 30 News reported. State police were investigating to find out what caused the crash.

The condition of the firefighter who suffered serious injuries was unknown. Five other firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Authorities said no other vehicles were involved.

Fire officials said the six firefighters were returning to the station at approximately 5 p.m. when the driver was coming down Brunning Road. The driver lost control of the fire truck, which then slammed into a tree. The lights and sirens were not on.

"He did try to take evasive action. He tried to avoid the tree, but with the weight of the apparatus, plus 1,000 gallons of water, he was not able to stop in time," said New Hartford Fire Chief Mark Worsman.

The estimated cost to replace the fire truck is $375,000.
