Hard To Find Blaze Frustrates New Jersey Firefighters

UNION CITY -- The fire started in the roof section of a vacant home on Palisade Avenue near 10th Street, said Chief Brion McEldowney of North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters responded Tuesday at 10:44 p.m. and it wasn't under control until 4:40 a.m. yesterday, McEldowney said.

The fire was so difficult to put out because it started in the narrow space between the top floor's ceiling and the roof, the chief said.

"Every now and then you get a fire like this that you just can't put out because it's in a hidden void," McEldowney said. "It was very difficult to access there because the only thing we could do is cut holes in the roof to get to it."
