WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) -- A teenager faces a capital murder charge in the Sept. 14 death of a 15-year-old in a fire at his home.
Police who arrested and charged Keltric Gilmer, 18, said he burglarized a townhouse and vehicles, then set a fire to cover his tracks. Investigators said Gilmer likely knew people were inside because cars were present outside.
''There were vehicles in the driveway and the lights were on. I believe that he knew that they were there,'' said Allen.
Nick Wilson died in the blaze. Assistant Police Chief Mike Allen said late Tuesday that officers had arrested Gilmer and charged him with capital murder, residential burglary, arson, theft of property and breaking and entering.
Allen said Gilmer had contacted police at the scene of the fire and told officers that he was riding by on his bicycle when he heard a woman screaming from a second-story window.
Property stolen from the residence was found a week after the fire in a field near an abandoned apartment complex. Wilson's mother, Stephanie Carter, said the items belonged to her.
Allen said Gilmer was already in jail on a loitering charge and was scheduled for arraignment late Wednesday in West Memphis District Court. Gilmer will not be allowed bond because capital murder is not a bondable offense.
Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue the death penalty.
Detectives said Gilmer admitted being involved in the incident and it is possible that others could be charged.
Fire Chief Arburt Robinson said firefighters were called to a townhouse complex about 3:35 a.m. The boy's mother jumped from a second-story window and was rescued, though she suffered injuries including a broken leg.
