SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- A candle was blamed for a Salisbury University dorm fire that forced hundreds to evacuate and sent two to the hospital.

The fire alarm St. Martins Hall went off just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. About 300 residents had to abandon the dorm.

Aaron Boker, a sophomore, woke up to the alarm and said at first he thought it was a joke.

''It took a little while to realize that we might want to get out,'' he told The (Salisbury) Daily Times.

Dave Gutoskey, director of resident life, said about 15 rooms were affected by the blaze, which took firefighters 10 minutes to extinguish. Investigators said the fire was caused by an unattended candle that ignited clothes in a closet.

Two sophomores who lived in the dorm were taken to the hospital complaining of chest and stomach pains and nausea from the smoke.
