Four-Alarmer Challenges Georgia Firefighters

DeKalb County firefighters battled two major apartment fires Tuesday night.

The first, a four-alarm blaze, broke out at the Villas at Springfield Apartments at 3237 Buford Highway.

One three story building in the complex was a complete loss. Firefighters say double roof construction allowed the blaze to spread among the units in the building.

At least 74 residents were displaced by the damage.

Shortly after they got that fire under control a two-alarm fire broke out at the Fox Fire Apartments at 6676 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Firefighters who were still cleaning up at the first fire on Buford Highway were called to help battle the second blaze.

Rebecca Douglas, a Fox Fire resident, was trapped on her third floor balcony by spreading flames and thick smoke. Other residents heard her cries for help and alerted two DeKalb County police officers.

They linked arms and urged the woman to jump. With no other option she stepped off the balcony and dropped 30 feet.

Like Andrew Jones snagging a Turner Field fly ball, the officers caught her and turned her over to paramedics to check her for smoke inhalation.
