Body Found After Mobile Home Explodes in Florida

Feb. 16, 2006
Neighbors speculate the body is that of a 67-year-old resident.

A mobile home exploded in Lake County Wednesday night, burning a person inside so badly that investigators are having a hard time identifying the body, according to a Local 6 News report.

Authorities said sheriff's deputies were called to a mobile home near DeLand, Fla., Wednesday night for a domestic disturbance.

About an hour after deputies left the home, an explosion and fire were reported.

When firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, they found a body inside.

Neighbors said the body inside is likely a 67-year-old woman who used a walker and oxygen tank. She apparently lived in the mobile home with Russell Fitch, 73.

Fitch was not at home at the time of the fire.

Both Fitch and the woman had just moved into the home and were facing eviction before the fire, Local 6 News reported.

"The lady has threatened to set the house on fire before when they were going to evict her one time," neighbor Dallas Snowberger said. "There are a lot of stories. It is all heresay. It is kind of crazy that the house burned down. It did go pretty quick."

Police said although Fitch was not home at the time of the fire, he was hospitalized for some unknown reason.

Deputies are trying to determine if the fire was arson or if it was an accident.
