The top floor of a century-old building in the Highlands went up in flames Wednesday night.
The fire began at about 8:30 p.m. in the third floor of the building that houses the Alcott-Bentley antique lamp store on Baxter Avenue, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Mike Petchenik reported.
As many as 60 firefighters were at the scene at one point, and at 11 p.m., Petchenik reported that many were still at the scene watching for hot spots that continued to flare up. Investigators said they expected to remain there overnight, and added that that area of Baxter -- between Broadway and Highland avenues -- could be blocked off for Thursday's morning rush.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but plenty of memories have gone up in flames. One man at the scene told Petchenik that his great-grandfather helped build the structure in 1895.
"I don't know what to think," said Jimmy Kirchdorfer, who owns Alcott-Bentley. "I hate to see this happen to such a beautiful building."
Once it seems all the hot spots have been put out, arson investigators will go inside to try to determine a cause.
