The lieutenant was stricken Saturday at a training center.

A firefighter in British Columbia collapsed and died on April 8 during a live fire training exercise at a training center.

Lt. Tom Upton, of the Gabriola Island Fire Department, was stricken shortly after lunch while receiving his team's assignment for the first structural fire attack of the weekend training program, according to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Colleagues rushed to him, and attempted to revive him. However, their efforts were fruitless. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

He is survived by a wife and 10-year-old son.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tom's family and friends and the Gabriola Island Fire Department," said Aaron Feldman, CFFF western regional vice president.
