Three horses were killed in a three-alarm fire in Wilton early Thursday morning.

An antique barn at 63 Hillside Road was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Officials said they knew there was no way they could save the structure, so they concentrated on keeping it from spreading to the house, which was about 20 feet away.

Firefighters were able to save the house even though the heat that was so intense that it melted part of a car parked in the driveway.

The home was located at the end of a dead-end road, and there was a problem getting water to the site. The homeowner also had a problem when he went to call 911.

"The homeowner went to call 911 and the telephone line had already burned through, but somehow, there was an open line, so they sent a police officer up here to see what was going on," Deputy Fire Chief Dave Boissonnault said.

No one was injured in the fire. Firefighters said they are not sure how the fire started, but there was electricity and a heated office in the barn.
