Two-Alarmer in Atlanta Burns Apartments

April 11, 2006
Older construction allowed the blaze to spread.

Firefighters knew they had a major fire on their hands.

Even as the alarm sounded in their southwest Atlanta fire station they could see flames rising from a nearby apartment building.

The two-alarm blaze completely destroyed the building at 175 Walnut Street early Tuesday morning. At least eight families were burned out of their homes.

Everyone in the building got out safely.

Firefighters say the lack of fire walls in the older building allowed the blaze to spread quickly from one apartment to another.

One resident was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.
