CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio 780/STNG) -- A minivan and a fire truck were involved in an accident that sent five firefighters in good condition and five passengers from the minivan in serious condition to hospitals Tuesday on the South Side, police said.

The accident, involving a minivan and a fire truck, happened at 200 W. 59th Street, according to Wentworth District Sgt. Lisa Chibe.

Five passengers from the minivan were sent to trauma centers in serious condition, according to Fire Media spokesman Cmdr. Will Knight. Five firefighters from the truck were sent to the hospital in stable condition with "bumps, bruises and minor injuries" said Knight.

The accident near the intersection of 59th Street and Wentworth Avenue happened just after 8 a.m., said Chibe. Knight said the truck was responding to an automatic alarm at 5900 S. Loomis.

Knight reminded drivers to pull to the right for emergency vehicles. Noting that airtight windows on modern cars can make it difficult to hear sirens when the windows are rolled up. Knight urged motorists to be alert for the flashing lights that signal the approach of an emergency vehicle.
