Several firefighters were injured and more than a dozen tenants were displaced after flames ripped through a local apartment building Wednesday.
The fire broke out at about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 6400 block of Six Mile Lane, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Mike Petchenik reported. It took nearly 50 firefighters about 40 minutes to put the fire out, and some were still at the scene at about 11 p.m. to make sure any hot spots didn't flare back up in building 200 at Raintree Gardens.
"Everything I own was in there," said resident Shamika Johnson, who was reunited with her dog a short time after she got out of the building safely. "All I wanted was my baby. All I wanted was my dog."
Added another resident: "This is crazy. I never thought fire could do something like this."
Three firefighters were taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Petchenik reported. A fourth firefighter suffered second-degree burns from tar that had melted off the roof.
Apartment complex managers and the Red Cross will help the displaced tenants. Fire investigators said they don't suspect foul play.
"I can start over now," Johnson said. "I've got me, so I'm good. And I've got family, so I'm going to make it."
