It took 60 firefighters to extinguish the flames

Howard County firefighters battled a blaze at an ice cream factory near Laurel Thursday morning.

The 2-alarm fire started around 10:30 a.m. at the Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream facility along Route 1. There are no reports of injuries, but smoke is still coming from inside the building.

The company announced a $180 million expansion in November that would increase the existing Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream facility to nearly 50 acres of land and 700,000 square feet of workspace -- six times larger than the current plant. It is not known if the fire involved the expansion work.

Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream Holdings Inc. produces a variety of ice cream and frozen desserts. Its labels include Edy's, Nestle and Haagen-Dazs.
