Watching a fire truck barrel down the street, you'd think its size and bulk would mean it has to be safe for the firefighters inside. But the head of their union told members of the City Council Tuesday that looks can be deceiving. NY1's Amanda Farinacci filed this report.
Some 280 firefighters responded to a six-alarm fire in the Bronx back in February. Hundreds of people were evacuated, and dozens of firefighters were injured, including one firefighter from Ladder 19 who tried to get out the window of a burning apartment.
Ladder 19 could not raise its ladder to rescue the firefighter. He was later saved by another company's ladder.
The firefighters union says the defective rig should not have been in service in the first place.
