A fire that gutted a dozen Blair County businesses Monday night is under investigation.

The fire broke out around 9 p.m. in the Spring Plaza Shopping Center. Most of the stores destroyed were near the center of the mall.

Crews were working Tuesday afternoon to restore electricity to the businesses in the plaza. They were also putting up tarps to protect shoppers once the plaza reopens.

The two hardest hit stores were Bulger's Jewelry and Nancy's Floral. The fire marshal said the fire did start above Bulger's and he is still trying to determine a cause.

Other businesses in the strip mall sustained smoke damage, but are expected to reopen when electricity is restored.

Crews worked until early Tuesday morning to contain the blaze. The fire marshal said more businesses would have been destroyed had it not been for firefighters' quick response.

There were no injuries.
