A toddler died in an apartment fire in Wahiawa on Sunday afternoon.

It happened at about 2:30 p.m. on California Avenue near Cypress Avenue.

The fire broke out in a front bedroom on the second floor of a two-story building and was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

Other members of the family were reportedly in a front living room and made it out, but the fire in a back bedroom trapped a 2-year-old boy.

"People were yelling that there was a baby inside. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire fairly quickly. Once they made their way into the bedroom they did find a baby near the closet area," fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said.

Medical personnel pronounced the child dead.

Six people lived in the home that was gutted. Damage is estimated to be $60,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
