MARYLAND: 2 Alarms For Strip Mall Fire

College Park, MD, Dec. 14, 2005 – At about 11 A.M., a 911 call reported a fire on the roof of a single-story strip shopping center. Prince George’s County firefighters and paramedics responded to the 9900 block of Rhode Island Avenue in College Park and encountered a one-story, four-store commercial strip with heavy fire coming through the roof. The strip mall is attached at one end by a two-story office/commercial building and a City of College Park Recreation Center located just 10 feet away at the other end.

The fire was well advanced throughout the common attic/roof area of the commercial strip as firefighters initiated operations to extinguish the fire and protect the exposures on each side. A second alarm was sounded, bringing additional firefighters and paramedics to the scene. Sixty-five firefighters and paramedics operated for nearly 45 minutes to knock down the bulk of the fire. The cause of the fire was attributed to a heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) unit located on the roof. The fire loss was put at $350,000.

MARYLAND: Units from 4 Counties Battle Apartment Building Blaze

Laurel, MD, Nov. 13, 2005 – Just after 1:30 P.M., units from the Laurel area responded to a report of an apartment building on fire. Fire/EMS units from Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard and Anne Arundel counties operated on the scene of the fire at the Town and Country Apartment Complex. First-arriving units from the Laurel Rescue Squad reported heavy smoke issuing from the apartment roof. The fire soon broke through the roof and started to extend into an attached building. Firefighters cut off the fire and limited extension into the attached building. A second alarm was sounded, bringing 65 firefighters and paramedics to the scene. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in 30 to 45 minutes. One firefighter sustained a minor injury to his foot and was treated and released from a hospital. Ten apartments were rendered uninhabitable and 30 residents were displaced. Fire investigators determined a faulty furnace in a second-floor unit caused the fire. The loss was estimated at $500,000.
