COBB COUNTY, Ga. --
Cobb County firefighters battled a barn fire late Thursday night with tragic results. Officials said the building quickly burned and collapsed, killing 14 horses.
The incident happened at Westbrooke Farms on 5146 Burnt Hickory Road in Kennesaw.
Cobb County Fire Department spokesman Dan Dupree says firefighters were called to the scene in northwest Cobb County around 11 p.m. Thursday and found the barn fully engulfed. Dupree says the fire also caused the barn's roof to collapse.
Dupree says the fire appears to be an accident but it will take time to make a final determination because of the amount of damage and debris.
The barn's owners provide boarding services and Dupree says it is unclear how many of the horses belonged to the owners and how many were being housed there for others.
Cobb County police told Channel 2 the homeowners did not want to talk about the tragedy at this time.
According to their web site, Westbrooke Farms is a horse breeding and boarding facility. The site said the owners sells young horses for as much as $19,000.
