September 12, 2005 -- A heroic homeless man ran through his Bronx shelter shouting, "Fire! Fire!" yesterday after fast-moving flames engulfed a nearby historic church and apartment building.
The four-alarm inferno broke out at 3:52 a.m. in the Ebenezer Baptist Church at 921 Eagle Ave. in Morrisania and quickly razed the 100-year-old house of worship.
Then, the flames engulfed a five-story apartment building at 919 Eagle Ave., forcing the evacuation of 14 families.
That's when Mark Santos, 23, who lives in Mike's House, a city homeless shelter at 917 Eagle Ave., swung into action.
Seeing the flames and smelling the smoke, Santos, a father of three who moved to the Big Apple from Connecticut three months ago, began running from door to door, shouting for people to get out.
Everyone did.
"The smoke was really bad," Santos told The Post. "I ran from door to door, knocking on people's doors, and I was able to get everyone out.
"The lady that lived next door to me couldn't stop thanking me because she was in a deep sleep, and I kept knocking hard to wake her up."
In all, 53 people were evacuated, and 16 people
