It was an early morning in June when a fire razed a two-story apartment on Duncan Avenue in Jersey City and Firefighter Patrick Murphy and two others were on duty.

They responded to the alarm, rushed to the scene and put out the fire. Murphy carried an infant and a toddler out of the fire in his arms.

For his bravery, Murphy was awarded a plaque of valor Saturday at the annual awards ceremony of Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey, held at the Hyatt Regency on the Jersey City waterfront.

Thirty-seven other firefighters were given valor awards, 13 of them from Jersey City, including Patrick Healy, the son of Mayor Jerramiah Healy.

"We will make sure we'll live up (to) our obligation, making sure you have the resources to protect the protectors," said Gov. Jon Corzine, who attended the ceremony.
