It happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday night just off Del Dios Highway near Rancho Drive. When Rancho Santa Fe firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were shooting out of the 1992 BMW sedan.

Jeffrey Stephen Kallam, 35, who was sitting in the driver's seat when firefighters arrived, was taken to the UCSD Medical Center by air ambulance. Kallam, who was pronounced dead at 6 a.m., had third-degree burns on more than half of his body.

Officials said the cause of the vehicle fire is still undetermined but is most likely accidental or electric in nature.
