LA JOLLA, Calif. --

Copter 1, firefighters and lifeguards come to the aid of a woman who fell overnight from a La Jolla cliffside.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews received the call around 3:01 a.m. Wednesday morning at 1155 Coast Blvd.

The 22-year-old woman was with an unidentified man at the time of the fall. She fell approximately 20 feet from the cliff while walking along Coast Boulevard near Girard Avenue, officials said. She fell onto some rocks, suffering neck, back injuries and a broken foot, rescuers said.

Capt. Kyle Passini of the San Diego Fire Department said fire crews were prepared to use rope systems to rescue the woman but opted for Copter 1 instead.

"Copter 1 as a resource is far quicker and safer to have them come in and access the individual than it is to use ropes in the dark," Passini said.

According to fire department spokesman Maurice Luque, this was the medic's first rescue at night.

Members of the San Diego Police Department, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego lifeguards assisted in the rescue.
