Canyon County, Idaho-- A drunk driver is facing criminal charges after taking a fire engine for a joyride with the lights and sirens blaring.
Canyon County sheriff's deputies first spotted the fire truck driving north on highway 45 just after midnight. They didn't know of any fires in the area and called area dispatch centers to investigate.
Eventually, deputies pulled the truck over south of Nampa and arrested Winston Goering. He was found to be driving under the influence at twice the legal limit.
"What was in this person's mind, the subject, Winston Goering, who was taken into custody, we don't know what the circumstances were or what he was thinking about," said Lt. Marv Dashiell, with the Canyon County Sheriffs Office.
The fire truck belonged to the Murphy Reynolds Wilson Volunteer Fire Department in Owyhee County, where Goering is a volunteer firefighter.
Goering is charged with joy riding and driving under the influence. It his second DUI offense. Each charge carries a maximum one year jail sentence.
