A Chicago firefighter was injured Monday morning when an extra-alarm fire that started at a Payless Shoe store in the Northwest Side's Humboldt Park neighborhood.

A still-and-box alarm was called at 7:15 a.m. for the fire at a Payless Shoe Store at 2082 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.

A still-and-box alarm automatically sends to the scene four fire engines, two fire trucks, one tower ladder, three battalion chiefs, one deputy district chief, one squad company, one command van and one ambulance.

The alarm was upgraded to a 2-11 alarm at 7:43 a.m., Rosado said.

Firefighters attacked the fire in the one-story, commercial structure defensively, according to Rosado, who said there was fire throughout the building.

The roof did not collapse, but a 10-by-10 foot section supporting an air conditioner fell in, he said.

One firefighter was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment of "very minor injuries," Rosado said, correcting initial reports. Rosado had no information on the circumstances causing the firefighter's injuries as of noon Monday.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire was out as of 9 a.m., but firefighters remained at the scene pouring water on the building and chasing hot spots, Rosado said.
